Are you already playing Pokémon Go? In addition to catching them all, your step count can help our sheltered animals. We are partnering with Walk for a Dog free app so that while you are hatching your eggs, you can help raise money for us! It's really a win-win situation and we're having so much fun ourselves.
Paco is a playful 8 year old chihuahua with endless spunk and personality. Recently Friends of SVACA took him under our care. He very badly needed some dental work done. Even though we don't typically sponsor rescues, we had already fell in love with him.
Eight teeth extractions later Paco is 100% again. Friends of SVACA is asking you to help pitch in for Paco's costs. He is doing great and needs to off set some of the costs before adoption. Any donations towards his medical cost would amount to a lot!

China-Made Pet Treats Are Treating Cats, Dogs & Humans Badly: FDA Announces Jerky Snacks Link to Over 1,000 Deaths & 5,000 Illnesses
In late May, Petco announced that it would be pulling all China-made dog and cat treats from their stores, more than 1,300 locations nationwide. The FDA recently announced that jerky treats, primarily imported from China, are linked to over 1,000 dog deaths and almost 5,000 illnesses in dogs, cats, and, in a reported “first,” even humans.
Petco made history by being the first ever national pet retail chain to remove all China crafted pet treats from their shelves. In light of the research that the FDA conducted over seven years investigating links between the treats and symptoms that include gastrointestinal sickness and kidney failure, Petco CEO Jim Myers cited safety concerns for both pets and people for making this decision. Petco will now offer products solely made in the United States, New Zealand, Australia and South America.

Maddie's Pet Adoption Days 2014 Fast Facts
...and far too nondescript a word to accurately detail what happened at Maddie's Pet Adoption Days this year!
While there may not be a Merriam-Webster dictionary definition that truly describes this life-changing happening, the nation's largest no-fee, pet adoption event was truly successful. Over 15,000 rescue animals were adopted, which is a whopping 78% increase over last year's 8,432 adoptions. Thanks to the passionate and tireless collaboration of volunteers, shelters and rescue organizations across the country, Maddie's Pet Adoption Days, in only it's 5th year, has exceeded their goals and helped thousands of families and animals find happiness.

Riddle: what day occurs yearly, creates huge amounts of joy, and is cause for fun and festivities-but isn't a holiday?
Answer: maybe it's not a holiday but it probably should be-it's SVACA's Annual Adoptathon!
Please join us in celebrating companion animals at SVACA's 8th Annual Adoptathon on Saturday May 3rd, 2014, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The event will take place at the SVACA animal care facility at 3370 Thomas Road, Santa Clara, CA 95054.
Adopters will have the chance to meet a variety of animals (including animals from SVACA's Rescue Partners, including Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue, MickaCoo Pigeon and Dove Rescue, and Our Pack, Inc.) and pay what they want in adoption fees.
Additionally, we at Friends of SVACA will be holding a raffle to raise funds that directly benefit the shelter animals and admission is FREE!
